“Same-Sex Marriage?”

This was quite possibly the hardest, busiest, most exhausting week of my pastoral ministry up to this point (for a variety of reasons, including a situation that required A LOT of pastoral attention). It’s a good thing I was scheduled to preach this sermon on an easy subject like same-sex marriage!

God must be trying to teach me something; part 5 of our series on marriage just happened to coincide with a week that I unexpectedly got pulled away from sermon preparation to deal with urgent issues. Like I said, God must be trying to teach me something. I didn’t have time to write out my sermon like I normally do, so I didn’t have a sense of how long it was…which is probably why this ended up being the longest sermon I’ve ever preached! But I think since it’s such a controversial topic and important one for our people to be equipped to think through, that a few extra minutes on one Sunday isn’t such a big deal.

I don’t normally give out anything resembling a bibliography when I preach, but I did put together something along with the congregational notes for this sermon. I thought it was an important to provide some recommended resources for those who have further questions or are interested in studying more about the Biblical perspective on homosexuality and same-sex marriage. Some of the resources are short blog posts, some are longer articles or papers, and some are book-length treatments of certain issues. Overall, I hope that this sermon and these resources serve to help the church glorify God in the areas of sexual purity and marital faithfulness as we seek to further our mission of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.
