“Marriage: It’s Not What You Think!” (Genesis 1-2)

After spending quite a bit of time thinking and writing about marriage in preparation for my ordination process, I was excited to preach the first sermon in our new series on marriage to start 2015. Arizona, of course, legalized same-sex marriage a few months ago. That fact along with a need in our own congregation to strengthen marriages led us to address the topic. My goal in this first sermon was to help us grasp the overall purpose of marriage as seen in God’s design in Genesis 1-2, so that we might rejoice in and worship Him. Hopefully the rest of the series will build on this foundation to God’s glory in Christ!

Reconsidering Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage

As stated previously, as I go through my ordination process I’m doing more study on several doctrinal areas and how some of those relate to current issues. One of those areas is what I believe the Bible says about marriage, divorce, and remarriage. I consider this topic as of the utmost importance, since it is so foundational to society as well as the fact that issues surrounding marriage make up the bulk of pastoral counseling and cases of church discipline. I’ve reassessed my position through much research, prayer, and contemplation and actually modified my position in two meaningful ways regarding divorce and remarriage. Continue reading
